For a city as ancient and vibrant as Athens, mobility is not just about moving people; it’s about connecting history with the future. Over the past decade, Greece’s capital has experienced an unprecedented surge in both resident activity and international tourism, putting immense strain on its aging transport network. Now, the Ministry of Infrastructure is tackling this challenge head-on, preparing to unveil one of the most comprehensive public transport upgrades the city has seen in years, with a decisive target date of 2026.
The goal, as stated by Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Konstantinos Kyranakis, is not merely to fix existing problems, but to deliver a faster, more reliable, and ultimately more sustainable transport experience across the entire capital region. This strategic investment recognizes that for Athens to thrive as a modern, world-class destination, its visitors and residents must be able to move seamlessly from the Acropolis to the coast, and from their homes to their workplaces.
A crucial part of the plan focuses on the arteries of the city: the bus network. The ministry has already shown commitment by increasing both services and staffing levels since 2025. A new call for 300 additional drivers is currently underway, acknowledging that without the human element, new hardware is useless.
However, the major game-changer is the massive renewal of the public transport fleet. By March 2026, nearly 2,000 new buses are expected to be operational, with plans for more than 3,500 by 2027. This influx of modern vehicles is essential for improving service quality and reducing emissions.
The ministry is specifically targeting the 15 busiest routes, where service frequency will be significantly increased during peak hours. This enhancement is designed to benefit two key groups simultaneously: the daily commuter struggling with rush hour and the tourist navigating the city’s key attractions.
Fixed-track transport, which forms the efficient backbone of the city, is also receiving major attention. The Athens Metro is set for a significant upgrade that will enhance both capacity and safety.
A critical, behind-the-scenes modernization involves the complete replacement of 32,000 kilometers of rail across the network. This comprehensive renewal is expected to improve safety standards while simultaneously allowing for faster travel speeds, optimizing the system’s efficiency for years to come.
Looking forward, the ministry announced that the planned metro extension to Glyfada will enter its study phase in early 2026. This extension is far more than a simple geographical expansion; it is a vital piece of the puzzle for serving the wider Elliniko area, which is poised to host one of the largest and most ambitious new urban developments in all of Europe. Connecting the center directly to this massive coastal development is essential for its success and integration into the Athenian economy.
The modernization goes beyond the urban core, encompassing major projects aimed at tackling Greece’s chronic issues of traffic congestion and outdated infrastructure:
The benefits will be felt everywhere: tourists will enjoy faster, easier access from their hotels to archaeological sites and the coast; commuters will spend less time stuck in traffic; and the city as a whole will breathe a little easier with a newer, greener public transport fleet. By prioritizing mobility, Athens is ensuring that its future is as accessible and enduring as its past.
